-Have a clear definition for your project. Think about what needs to be done and the type of results you want. Do basic research on your project so that you can at least know the basics of what is involved and a rough estimate of the price. The contractor will see that you know what you are talking about and will be less likely to give you an inflated quote.
- Request credentials such as license and insurance. Unless you use a service like QualitySmith you can never be 100% sure you are hiring a qualified contractor. Asking for credentials will at least discourage the less sophisticated crooked contractors.
- Request references. If they have done work in your area, they should have no problem producing them. Once you have them, see if you can contact some of their previous customers or perhaps inspect some of their previous work. Again, using a service like QualitySmith can save you time as they request these references from the contractors before they join their network.
- Get multiple quotes. This will ensure you get the best prices. Once again, QualitySmith to the rescue. They provide you with multiple quotes by simply completing one simple form. This will save you time and since contractors are competing with each other, it will save you money.
There is nothing worse than spending your hard earned money on a project that is not done to your satisfaction. Unfortunately, that is all too common in the Miami-Dade area.
This page will show you some examples of what can happen when you select an unlicensed and poorly qualified contractor or handyman. Remember that cheapest is not always better. Considerthe fact that if the job is poorly done, it can devalue your home or make it less desirable to potential buyers. You may also have to have it redone costing you even more than having it properly done the first time. During bad real estate markets, you can ill afford either.

Here are but few of the disasters that "handymen" and contractors have done at my parents house. These guys all claimed to know what they were doing. My parents being the gullible people that they are, went with these guys either because they came cheap or because they had done work at other people's homes. Don't make the mistake they made and find a qualified contractor. Click the links below to find out more about these home improvement projects gone wrong.
